Add some sort of photo map layer

It would be nice to have a new map layer which displays photos on the map. Maybe something similar to Komoot Trail View, Google Earth Photos or OsmAnd Explore. This is useful to get a feel for a region, discover new places to go, assessing the possibility of wildcamping and most importantly seeing the road type and condition.

Another update related to photo layer. We can add photos to cycling routes, attractions and "trail view / route view". There is new "trail view / route view" layer which displays those photos on the map.

Kacper Golinski This looks great! How are the photos mapped? Does this only work with images with GPS attributes? You can only upload photos to existing routes, right? I've been cycling through Europe since the beginning of May and now have hundreds of trail view photos from almost 10'000km. A general photo upload would be nice, where you can add all your photos and it uploads all those with GPS attributes automatically.

Nico We have few types of photos that we can upload: - **Route view images** (like Trail View in Komoot) - they should display route surface, route conditions etc. No selfies, no POI. You can uplad them in here https://veloplanner.com/route-view-upload and app will read their coords from the metadata. But remember to quickly check location on the map - sometimes GPS is not accurate :) Then, you can see them as a separate layer on the map. - **POI images** - when you click on specific POI on the map, you can add photos directly there. IT's useful to add photos for some attractions, campsites etc. It's like in Google. - **Cycling routes images** - images needs GPS metadata, you can upload them directly to specific official rotues present in https://veloplanner.com/routes - you can include route view here as well, some nice scenic view, attractions etc. I hope I didn't make it to complex :)

Nicobtw, we have chalalnge right now. Each photo or review gives you points. Then in the end of September, top 8 users will receive gifts (bikepacking bags or panniers) from our sponsors https://veloplanner.com/community/ranking#contribute-section

Kacper Golinski Oh, I was not aware that the first option existed. That is perfect, thanks for the explanation!

Kacper Golinski The upload sadly does not work for me. The images do have GPS embedded, but Veloplanner says the don't. Taken with a Google Pixel 9 Pro. EDIT: I think I figured it out. The GPS data seems to be removed if you select the images from the quick selector that pops up. You have to select them with the gallery app with some additional steps (three dots, "open with"), then the upload works. Weird...

Just small update. Now we can upload images (and reviews) to POIs. This in the (near) future will be used as photo map layer. Next I will add photos for cycling routes (trail view, attractions etc).

I think this idea can be combined with multiple photos upload - I have a lot of photos of trail surface with geotagging and it would be great if user is able to upload multiple of them at once. For viewing - don't forget about "created at" info and some sort of community suggestions for added photos (wrong geolocation, inapproriate photo, outdated).

That's great suggestion. Do you mean a feature where users can upload their own photos or use some public source? I'm thinking about adding community POI (points of interests) which could also work as photo layer.

Kacper Golinski It depends on what you want from the photos. Different sources would provide different value. Public source is probably more general while community photos could add biketouring specific information you cannot find anywhere else. And community POI would be great! That is actually a good implementation for my other POI related suggestion I posted (add POIs, differentiate .POIs and add information to POIs) .

Nico I would prefer to source community photos, they would be bike and bike touring specific as you mentioned. I was thinking also about compbining POI with Trail View. I'm thinking that POI could have type "trail view" (beside all other types) which would be just a photo of a trail conditions.

Kacper Golinski Yes, absolutely! That would be a great way to add trail view!
